5 - PROGRAM / SERVICE / ACTIVITY PURPOSES
Rising of the awareness of the competencies and possibilities of older people for active arrangement of the pension phase. The aim is the empowerment and activation of older people in order to prevent social isolation, foster informal networks, and a healthy transition between employment and retirement phase.

In the project methods are developed which help to actively integrate older people into society and give them simultaneously formal and informal learning opportunities to become aware of the abilities and to develop them.

In the end workshop participants have a personal profile of competences, strengths and skills plus a concrete action plan which they can use for his/her engagement in society. It helps to get a better self-confidence, provides empowerment, activation and prevents mental ill-health and social exclusion.

6 - RESOURCES
a.- Which materials were used?
By the use of the materials older participants get a picture which forms of formal and informal learning possibilities are available and suitable for their own engagement in the community (eg volunteering, social and political activities). Furthermore, a two-day competence workshop (including a training handbook) with older people was developed.
Therefore the materials and the course were built on an information and materials collection about education, competence and engagement of older people, a needs analysis of older people about expectations.
b.- Who conducted the program / service activity? (What role, what qualifications, etc.)
The course (curriculum) was developed in course of a Leonardo Da Vinci Programme partnership with Austrian (Austrian Red Cross, Research Institute of the Red Cross, Circle of Austrian Adult Education), Finland (Adult Education Centre of the City of Helsinki), Germany (ISIS Institut für Soziale Infrastruktur), Hungary (Budapest Cultural Centre), Italy (Lunaria), and UK (PRIAE – Policy Research Institute on Ageing and Ethnicity, University of Strathclyde Glasgow, INTEVAL ltd.). The courses were implemented by adult educators.

7 - METHODOLOGY USED (presentations, pair work, group work, peers, mentors, blended
learning, e-learning, etc.)
The first day of the competence workshop is structured has the motto “What are my strengths?”:

1. Balancing the biography (eg experiences with family, job, hobbies)
2. Development of a personal competences and skills profile (ie with strengths)

The second day of the workshop has the motto “Were do I want to do?”:
1. Development of a personal action plan
2. Details how the personal skills can be used for engagement and which steps are necessary to reach this aims.

Note: Between the first and the second workshop day there should be at least an one week break or reflection time.
In order to reach the aims the workshop uses a broad range of different methodologies and learning techniques consisting of presentations, group work (eg discussion rounds), pair work, single work (eg a memory map, skills checklist).

8 - PROGRAM / SERVICE / ACTIVITY SUMMARY DESCRIPTION
This is an innovative education program especially designed for older people which builds on a curriculum that base on existing knowledge about activation, participation in the concrete living situation of the aged. Furthermore it highlights not only the relevance for informal learning of older people but also that organisation (which offer such kind of educational programs) and processes within needs to be taken into account. So the program builds on the active participation of older people.
