5 - PROGRAM / SERVICE / ACTIVITY PURPOSES
An accepted definition of the so called Cognitive Stimulation or Psycho-stimulation described it as a range of activities and strategies for neuropsychological intervention aimed at promoting the Neuroplasticity of people with cognitive damage, by stimulating especially the functions and processes preserved.
This therapy is based on the corpus of knowledge provided by Neuropsychology, Cognitive Psychology, as well as the current theories and principles on human learning and motivation.
Within the line of the objectives established for non-pharmacological therapies, Cognitive Stimulation is aimed more specifically at improving the cognitive performance of people with cognitive damage or dementia, by enhancing cognitive the skills and abilities still preserved, and also slowing down the process of impairment.

6 - RESOURCES
a.- Which materials were used?
The materials included in the own program
b.- Who conducted the program / service activity? (What role, what qualifications, etc.)
Sessions must be conducted by trained instructors and overseen by professionals specialized in Neuropsychology.

7 - METHODOLOGY USED (presentations, pair work, group work, peers, mentors, blended
learning, e-learning, etc.)
Frequency and length of the sessions
Frequency of the sessions can be variable, considering appropriate from a minimum of three sessions a week to a daily frequency. The length of each session usually ranges between 30 minutes and 90 minutes for each group, depending on both the damaged severity of the members of the group and the kind of tasks to be carried out in the session.
Composition of the groups
It is important that the groups are, as far as possible, homogeneous according to the degree of their cognitive impairment. As a general guideline it is not advisable that there are above 15 people in the same room.
Session arrangement
The structure of the sessions can be very variable. Among other factors, it varies according to their frequency and length. A possibility quite a lot used is to plan daily sessions with a length of about 60 minutes, devoting the session to a single cognitive function, starting and finishing with orientation activities.
When the frequency is not daily, it can be appropriate arrangements as the following: starting the session with orientation tasks, continuing through tasks related to the different cognitive functions (memory/praxes/gnoses/executive functions) and finishing with language tasks.

8 - PROGRAM / SERVICE / ACTIVITY SUMMARY DESCRIPTION
First, it is established a series of techniques that can help to the development along two different lines: a) techniques for learning support and neurocognitive facilitation promoting appropriate behaviours and eliminating the inadequate, b)techniques for enhancing communication and motivation.
Next, it develops a typology of activities stimulating the different cognitive functions that includes:
A)Temporal, spatial and personal (autobiographical) orientation tasks
B)Orientation and gnosis tasks (visual, auditory and tactile discrimination, visual-spatial organization and body recognition
C)Praxis task (motor production of voluntary actions and visual-constructive skills)
D)Memory tasks (on its different kinds)
E)Language tasks (descriptions, verbal fluency, abstraction...)
F)Calculation tasks (counting, Arithmetic...)
G)Executive function tasks (concentration, planning...)
There is a CD of material that includes:

1) Database for planning the cognitive stimulation sessions
It is a simple database in Access format, consisted of different related tables, from where you get access to different enquiries and to the design of different forms and reports. It must be emphasized that this database provide a simple structure and some starting data that can be adapted, extended and complemented by the development of the programs carried out at the different centres or units.
Thus, the initial design of this database provide five tables, two of them already have data, while the rest should be recorded with the specific data of the people, groups and sessions that are being developed in each centre or unit where an intervention program with these characteristics is set in motion. In particular, the five tables included, with their respective forms, are:
-Table and form: Users
-Table and form: Groups
-Table and form: Session programming
-Table and form: Cognitive-Stimulation Activities or Tasks
-Table and form: Cognitive Functions

2) Graphic material for the cognitive stimulation tasks
From the CD you have access to graphic material prepared for carrying out some of the cognitive stimulation tasks presented here. The graphic material is presented in two files:
• The first one is labelled as material to be covered with plastic in cards or sheets, i.e. material to be used constantly.
• The second filed is labelled as fungible material, and it must be made a copy per person every time the task is performed.

3) Guide-forms for the development of the Reminiscence sessions
It has been included in the material a series of guide-forms where some aspects useful for the development of Reminiscence therapy sessions appear in a concise way.
Therefore, 16 guide-forms, related to the three groups of sessions that usually are carried out in this kind of program, have been included: biographical reminiscence sessions (4), sessions devoted to a single subject (8) and sessions related to specific dates (4). In these guide-forms it appears information referred to the eliciting stimuli recommended for the beginning of the sessions, also the main items that can be used to guide the reminiscences, and lastly, the aspects that can be included at the end of the session to try to established associative links to the present time.

4) Material for designing memory-training workshops
In this folder it is included a PowerPoint presentation useful for designing memory-training workshops for older people, as well as some card samples to perform individually the exercises proposed. Some forms with the summary of the workshop contents are also included.
