5 - PROGRAM / SERVICE / ACTIVITY PURPOSES
Although the ageing process does not deteriorate the memory functioning, there is indeed a decline or cognitive age-related impairment in the acquisition, storing and retrieval of information. With the passage of time older people usually lose their interest in learning new things due to psychological factors such as depression, loneliness or home desertion.
Age-related memory losses are provoked by alteration in attention-concentration and information perception, which gives rise to the so-called “benign memory losses”. This term does not mean that we must underestimate them, that it is why it is necessary to intervene preventively to avoid that these memory losses became part of a more severe medical picture that affect seriously to older people autonomy.

Objectives:
To improve and/or maintain cognitive abilities the longest possible time for those people that have started their impairment process.
To stimulate the cognitive processes involved in memory such as attention and concentration, perception, language or logical organization.
To train memory strategies and techniques to be applied on the solution to daily life memory losses (when they are not caused by a diagnosed organic disease.
To improve the state of mind and self-esteem by promoting an appropriate atmosphere of shared experiences that facilitates group work and interpersonal relations.
To promote transference of learning from training to daily life

6 - RESOURCES
a.- Which materials were used?
Depending on the cognitive area to be stimulated the will be: calendars, clocks, diaries, planning diagrams for daily life, notes, etc.
b.- Who conducted the program / service activity? (What role, what qualifications, etc.)
Plan coordinators and technical team are: Mª Soledad Núñez Jiménez, Head of Service of Attention Programs for Older People; Fernando Almodóvar Pérez, Head of Section for Attention in Community; Luis Antonio García Márquez, Technician of the Service Attention Programs for Older People; and four women Graduated in B:A: in Occupational Therapy.

7 - METHODOLOGY USED (presentations, pair work, group work, peers, mentors, blended
learning, e-learning, etc.)
Cognitive stimulation within this program is carried out in group, mainly through an implementation methodology, considering that this is the most effective strategy in order to achieve better results in rehabilitation and compensatory areas, aimed at keeping and improving the cognitive abilities that still remain and trying to restore or compensate for the losses as far as possible. For this purpose, specific strategies, including visualization, association, organization, categorization, repetition and semantic elaboration, are used. Through them older people will improve their performance in daily life by reducing to a minimum the appearance of, for example, “benign memory losses”.
This program intended for people at risk or in state of dependence, is based on the evidence that while the appropriate training of cognitive abilities result in an improvement or conservation of their conditions, the lack of training leads to a gradual damage so they can be disappear. People receiving few stimuli from their environment will suffer more quickly the decline of their mental faculties than those that have a constant and sufficient stimulation flow.
In short and according to the cognitive areas to be stimulated, different methods and techniques are used. They include image and word association, exercises for category recalling, promotion of reading and writing exercises, practice of tasks used in daily-life activities, and combinations and sequences of numbers.

8 - PROGRAM / SERVICE / ACTIVITY SUMMARY DESCRIPTION
The treatment focus on the stimulation of the following cognitive areas:
- Spatial-temporal Orientation: Facilitating resources (calendars, clocks...) can be used and the use of external aids (planning diagrams for daily life, notes, reminders...) can be favoured. For example: external aid for preparing meal; objective: to remind older person to turn off the gas, encouraging independence in this activity; application on daily life: planning cooking activity avoiding home accidents.
- Language: Through image-word association activities, exercises for category recalling, naming objects, reading and writing activities... Example: Activity of group in families a list of words. Objective: To get people to learn how to classify words by categories. Application on daily life: organizing their shopping list.
- Praxis abilities: Practicing the execution of tasks applicable to daily life activities (getting dressed, washing, food, use of utensils...). Example: to tie a bowknot. Objective: to integrate fine movements aimed at succeeding in the activity. Application on daily life: To tie their shoelaces without help.
- Memory: Proposing activities of short-term memory (to remember a list of words...), recent memory (reproduction of a story recorded previously) and long-term memory (related to personal data of each life history). Example: Activities of association of family members’ names to their personal characteristics. Objective: To integrate the strategy of “remembering names”. Application on daily life: Remembering the names of their relatives and acquaintances without confusion.
- Calculation: Practicing combinations and sequences of numbers, methods for estimating the cost of their shopping list... Example: Activities to differentiate coins and their value and make arithmetic activities with them. Objectives: To keep and/or improve their ability to make calculating operations. Application on daily life: to provide security on the use of money for their daily shopping.

This program we are commenting is included in the 2nd Plan for Older People Attention within Castilla-La Mancha that develops a series of actions at three levels: individual, group, and community. At the group level, apart from the program commented, we can also find other interesting actions:
Program for physical exercise and health
Program for psychomotor intervention
Program for memory training
In regard to the Program for memory training, familiarization with the theoretical notion proposed and the practice on the use of strategies to “manage” their procedures and contents are promoted, enabling older people to identify their memory failures and to enhance their ability to solve the oversights more often appearing in the automatic actions (to take medication, turn off the gas, take the keys, cook...); memory of names (of known people, new contacts, celebrities...); understanding and retention of texts (newspapers, reading books, cooking recipes, medical reports...); prospective memory (give messages and do new actions); to forget to take everyday objects (keys, bag, stick...); attentive listening (radio and TV news and debates, messages, medical instructions, friends stories...); etc.
