My Life – My Story

Writing from your own experience

From anecdote to autobiography, the storyteller within urges us to share our recollections and experiences of life. ▪ Identify your audience and define your project
▪ Get the memories flowing and capture your experiences in a way that engages your readers
▪ Use life’s turning points and choices to create drama and suspense
▪ Write convincing, natural dialogue
▪ Bring experiences to life with descriptive detail
▪ Learn techniques from other writers by reviewing examples of their work
▪ Write faster and more fluently – and abolish writer’s block
▪ Present your story with style
▪ Use photos, illustrations and audio to add another dimension
▪ Get your work published using new on-line opportunities.

Participants can expect to complete a number of short autobiographical pieces during the course and will have the opportunity to make an action plan and timetable for ongoing writing.

Other courses offered include:
Write From the Heart - Many people write journals as a way of keeping track of their lives and working things out. Writing can be a powerful means of tapping into your unconscious mind and making discoveries about yourself and your world that you were previously unaware of. Writing is also increasingly used as a tool for healing. This day will explore the different benefits which writing can bring and give you the means to tap into your inner resources.

We will look at methods to: Discover what is really important to you / Bypass your internal censor / Come to terms with events /Find direction.

Unleash Your Writing Power - this unconventional two day course was originally developed as a means of unblocking people who felt unable to convey their words and thoughts on paper. But it has proved highly effective in enabling people in many walks of life to communicate through writing in a new and empowered way. It explores the roots of how and why we suppress our self expression, and encourages participants to ‘take the risk’ of communicating from a new and more powerful place. It is not a course about sentence construction or correct use of grammar and punctuation. But if you want to write fluently, with the ability to convince and persuade, this workshop may be for you. The techniques are part personal development and part writing skills and the focus is to help you connect with yourself. Until you do that, how can you connect with others? The exercises are short, spontaneous, different and fun. They are designed to encourage improved co-ordination between the heart and the head, or the left brain and right brain.
You will learn how to: Make writing an enjoyable, fun experience/ Write with increased fluency and ease/Gain confidence and avoid writer’s block/Write as naturally as you speak/Structure your writing effectively/Write powerfully and persuasively/Improve pace, readability and style/Communicate from the heart and the head/Inspire and motivate your readers.

8 - PROGRAM / SERVICE / ACTIVITY SUMMARY DESCRIPTION
My Life – My Story - Writing from your own experience

From anecdote to autobiography, the storyteller within urges us to share our recollections and experiences of life. Whether you want to write for publication, for children and grandchildren, or simply to understand the magic and meaning of your own life, this course will help you tell your tale in a way that’s lively, interesting and engaging.

We all have a rich treasury of anecdotes and memories to share. But where to start? How to shape our story? And how to write our recollections in a way that’s lively, interesting and engaging? Enjoyable exercises will help you trigger memories and focus on places, people and events that will fascinate your friends and family – or perhaps reach an even a wider audience.

For the MENTA project, the mode of writing and documenting experience is one which we need to be aware of in devising serious games. Drawing on past stories and memories to keep the brain active should be taken into account when considering appropriate curriculum approaches and methodologies - possibly in conjunction with other forms of recording the past- reminiscence, photography, group discussion and sharing thoughts and ideas.
